“Percy had seen big cities before. He was from New York, after all. But the sheer vastness of Rome grabbed him by the throat and made it hard to breathe.” It explains where the book takes place and affects the protagonist by providing him with a mission and a task to make it through Rome. “The last thing they needed as they flew a magical Greek trireme into a potentially hostile Roman camp.” This quote shows the culture within the book talking of ancient Greek and Roman legends. It affects the protagonist because his father is one of these Greek gods.
#2
Athena Parthenos- A 40 foot tall Greek statue that was stolen by Romans in ancient times. The statue represents the general environment of the characters as it provides Annabeth with one of the main goals of the whole book. It brings the two camps together in order to save the world.
Argo II- A large flying war ship used by the main characters to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to reach Rome. This represents the geographical location as it transports the main characters all across the world.
The Coliseum- A classic Roman building built in the heart of the forum in Rome. This building is a part of the geographical setting and is the spot of the main battle in the book. It provides the setting for the conflict of the book.
The Horn of Achelous- A horn of a minor river god one was believed to have been taken by Hercules as one of his trials set by Hera. The heroes must steal the other horn in order to please Hercules and pass into the Mediterranean. This is part of the culture of the book as Achelous and Hercules are both part of Greek Mythology.

“Percy is the most powerful demigod I’ve ever met. No offense to you guys, but if anyone can survive this he will.” This shows that the people around Percy respect him for his power and survival instincts. His friends have faith in him when many believe he would have no chance proving that the protagonist Percy Jackson is powerful and important.
“Many of Percy’s powers had gotten stronger over the years.” This shows that throughout the series Percy has grown as a person and as a fighter. His fighting abilities have continued to grow, as he gets older and stronger. This makes him a round dynamic character as we see many sides to him and he develops throughout the book and series.

SAE DOG This license plate fits my character because he is the son of Poseidon king of the seas, however he suffers from dyslexia so although it says SAE DOG he may read it as SEA GOD in recognition of his father.

“To break the Greeks spirit the Romans carted off the Athena Parthenos when they took over the city of Athens.” This offers up conflict because ever since this event the Greek and Roman demigods have hated each other. The two camps have been fighting ever since and this was the cause of a big war throughout the book as the Romans planned to invade the Greek camp.
“Giants, Jason said were off to Greece to stop them from waking Gaea.” This quote talks about the main conflict of the book the earth goddess Gaea waking from her deep sleep and trying to destroy human civilization. She tries to destroy human civilization by releasing monsters through the doors of death that the heroes must shut.

“Now in severe pain with her ankle wrapped in boards and bubble wrap, and carrying no weapon except her dagger, she faced Arachne- a monstrous half spider who wanted to kill her and make a commemorative tapestry about it.” This quote offers imagery with the monster weaving the tapestry and allows uses allusion to refer to the ancient Greek myth of Arachne and Athena. This allusion sets the basis for the story and strengthens the book.
“Leo rushed around like a madman.” The author Rick Riordan uses many similes throughout the book to compare the characters and to enhance the effect of his writing.
#2
Throughout the series Percy Jackson has grown from a weak little kid who couldn’t hold his own against another person to a mature selfless hero. He has become the most powerful Demigod on the planet and has emotionally matured incredibly. “Percy wasn’t a kid anymore. He didn’t want anyone he loved taking a risk for him. He had to be strong enough to be the protector himself.” This shows his selflessness putting others before himself and wanting to protect them rather than have them protect him.
