Mark Zuckerberg is an extremely hard working man that would bring a go get it mentality to a boycott of the 2014 Sochi games. As we see throughout the book The Accidental Billionaires Zuckerberg is a very determined, hard working and focused man (Mezrich). As Facebook was just beginning he set his sights on the success he wished to achieve and nothing was gonna get in his way from achieving his dream (Mezrich). He founded the company from his Harvard dorm room and was able to turn it into a multi-billion dollar company, this would not have been possible without his dedication and perseverance against obstacles he faced (Mezrich). Zuckerberg would bring the same aggressive mentality towards a boycott of the olympics that he brought to the success of his company. This aggressive attitude would certainly help gay rights activists with their attempt of a boycott at the 2014 Sochi winter games.
I understood the story quite well. I got the main parody that the story was making about a fairy tale, also my comprehension was good throughout the whole story. I don't think Stephen Fry is overreacting i think he is legitimately concerned for any gay athletes or fans that wish to partake or watch the olympic games in Sochi. He has legitimate concern with the ban of pro-gay propaganda in Russia and the social disapproval towards gay people there. Being gay himself he has felt the discrimination they receive first hand and with police and government turning a blind eye towards harassment to gay and lesbian people within their jurisdiction he has every right to be worried not only for gay people in Russia but for any gay person that wishes to compete or visit the olympic games in Sochi next February. I agree with him that the IOC and the Russian government must come to an agreement to protect gay and lesbian people during the olympics or a greater action must be taken. |
